Heal My Heel was originally conceived in 2017, and developed through to March 2019, when its Spring Hill, Brisbane clinic was officially open to patients.
After more than 15 years specialising in treating heel pain as a senior consultant at various Australian heel clinics, Heal My Heels's director and sole practitioner, Steve Lyford, saw the need for an alternative to the standard treatment regimes available for heel pain related pathologies. He also perceived a sense of confusion and frustration amongst heel pain sufferers due to the myriad of conflicting information / recommendations regarding heel pain, and as a result of poor patient outcomes with regards to treatment.
Consequently Steve devised Heal My Heel's Rehabilitation Programs (for the different types of heel pain) and uses them as the basis for treating Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles related issues, childhood Sever's etc.
Contained within its pages is footwear advice and guidelines, specific stretches and exercises, educational information, do's and don't's and tips and tricks. This program combined with an informative and educational consultation with Steve (along with perhaps some strapping on your heel / foot) is often all that is required to set you on the path to a pain-free heel.
If, however, your heel pain is more persistent, or the poor mechanics of your feet and lower limbs are the main cause of your heel pain, you may require this anomaly to be corrected in order to reduce the strain on the Plantar Fascia / Achilles tendon significantly enough for healing of the damaged fibres to occur.
Our ARC (Advanced Rearfoot Control) Orthotics are quite different from the standard arch based custom orthotics predominantly used in Australia. They are specifically designed by us to reduce as much strain as possible on the Plantar Fascia / Achilles Tendon (which can also reduce the pain of Sever's Disease in children more effectively). They are also extremely comfortable because of this difference in design (see Our Treatment page) and can be purpose made to fit in any style of shoe.
Heal My Heel's X-factor and other major point of difference is that we DO NOT use shock wave therapy to stimulate the healing response in the damaged tissue. Instead we use highly effective low level laser therapy to stimulate this healing response. We achieve this through the use of a state-of-the-art home use device which can be rented from us for a low weekly cost and used by you in the comfort of your own home. Its pain reducing and healing abilities are both proven and well documented. Many of our patients who have had little success with shock wave therapy are having fantastic results with this device.
So if you have been suffering with heel pain for months or even years, having tried everything to no avail, you should definitely give Heal My Heel's unique and comprehensive approach a try. Resolving so-called treatment resistant or stubborn cases is our special interest!
If on the other hand, you’ve only had it for a few days or a week, our advice would be don’t take the risk of hoping it goes away on its own. It’s probably been brewing for a long time, and research shows that the earlier you can take steps to counter the processes that have brought it about, the less the likelihood of it developing into a longstanding, chronic case, or a recurrence in the future.
Having built up his knowledge and expertise in four countries (New Zealand, Australia, England and the United States), Steve passionately shares his knowledge with patients through his excellent communication skills, breaking down complex biomechanical explanations into language that is easily comprehended.
Over the years, his primary focus has been in the field of musculo-skeletal podiatry, and in the last 15 years he has held a special interest in, and has worked extensively treating disorders that cause heel pain. Steve has seen, treated and resolved literally thousands of heel pain cases, from Plantar Fasciitis to Achilles related conditions, to Sever’s disease and others, all with extremely high success rates.
Steve has conducted a great deal of research and personal testing of the myriad of different types and styles of orthotic devices available (both prescription and ready-made) and therefore has a great sense of what different orthotics are capable of for different foot types, and for different problems.
More recently Steve has completed courses in Low Level Laser Therapy (Photobiomodulation), and has conducted extensive research, and trialed and tested various home-use low level laser therapy devices, analysing their effects on heel pain related disorders.
He believes “treatment-resistant” or incurable cases of Plantar Fasciitis are virtually non-existent, and feels with the right treatment plan pretty much every case can be resolved. Consequently, he has a special interest in treating just such cases of Plantar Fasciitis and other disorders of the heel.
